212 Degrees!

212 Degrees
Suva Elementary has adopted the 212° motivational philosophy that encourages its faculty, staff, and students to go the extra degree. At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. This simple analogy shows us that even seemingly small things can make tremendous differences. One extra degree of effort can result in exponential gains. To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done.

Principal's Message

Welcome to Suva Elementary

Dear Parents,

It is with great pride that we welcome you and your children to Suva Elementary – or rather Suva University.

Last school year proved to be an amazing year for Suva Elementary.  Our students participated in many exciting activities including school-wide assemblies (Back to School Pep Rally, the Ned Show, and 212 Degrees Pep Rally) and educational field trips through the great work of our PTA and the support of our entire Suva community.  In addition, many of our AVID students attended a UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl and a UCLA Women’s Basketball Game at the UCLA campus.

We have continued to achieve great accomplishments!  During the 2015-2016 school year, we were the proud recipients of two prestigious awards.  The California Department of Education awarded Suva Elementary the Gold Ribbon Schools Award and the Title I Academic Achievement Award.  During the 2016-2017 school year, we served as an AVID Elementary Showcase School and were visited by educators from schools throughout Southern California.  In addition, we just received word that Suva Elementary was awarded a Silver Medal from the California PBIS Coalition for the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports with our MTSS-B Program.  We take great pride in the accomplishments of our staff and students and will continue to work hard to achieve even greater accomplishments.

Our District takes pride in Suva Elementary!  During the summer, our school facilities were upgraded with new air conditioning units and lighting.  MUSD has adopted new textbooks for reading/language arts based on the Common Core State Standards and our teachers are being trained in this use of this new program.

We will continue to make great strides during the 2017-2018 school year.  My staff and I are committed to making Suva Elementary the best school in MUSD!

Suva is a special place!   Great accomplishments will continue to happen at our school!  Thank you for all of your support!

Sincerely,

 Mrs. Riddle, Principal

Close Reading

Our teachers have worked hard to develop a “Close Reading” strategy at each grade level.  During “Close Reading,” students closely read a non-fiction text more than once to gain information. Students are learning how to “Code the Text” by marking the passage as they read it closely.  Our teachers have created a “Text Code” at each grade level from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade.  During “Text Coding,” students number the paragraphs, put a star in front of the main idea, underline the supporting details, and circle key vocabulary or unknown words.  We are very proud of the work we have done with Close Reading and it will have a great impact on our students’ reading comprehension.  Way to go Suva Teachers!
